Day 3 of the Bario Trip
14 November 2023
After the heavy rains of the night, we all walked together from the Asal Longhouse to the morning market in Bario. We passed via the rice paddies, seeing the different colors of black rice shoots and white rice shoots. We learned the names of the different fruits and vegetables along the way. Once at the market, the students enjoyed buying local Bario salt, rice, and beads. Some of the girls even made their own necklaces. We then went to visit the museum, which explained the local history, the ancient burial places, and the struggles of the soldiers and local warriors during WW2 against the Japanese.
The afternoon, we visited a different farm to learn about where our food comes from. Students harvested their own roots and fruits to bring back for dinner. Afterwards, they had great fun using rice sacks for impromptu races.
We proceeded next to the solar farm, where electricity is produced for the Bario valley. A visit to the very well-stocked library followed before returning to the longhouse for another delicious lunch!
The 3rd day ended with a cultural entertainment from some of the renowned Kelabit ladies who carry their cultural dances around the world. The children were both amazed and also enjoyed joining in with the dances and games. There was so much laughter and enjoyment. The longhouse was ringing with joy!
Team-building and Creativity Challenges in Bario
14 November 2023
The students & teachers spent a fun-filled second day in Bario, at a stunning location in the jungle- the Eco Farm. Surrounded by fish ponds, a flowing stream, geese, turkeys wooden chalets & the greeness of nature, they undertook a number of challenges to test their team-building and creativity skills.
Several tasks involved blindfolds, where they had to learn to trust each other, and act without talking. Another challenge involved group co-ordination to turn a mat over with 16 people standing on it at all times.
The final competition involved building the tallest, most stable structure. Whilst one team was tallest, the other was more stable – so we called it a draw! Well done everyone!

Ecobrick Project
11 April 2023
Our school is collaborating with Miri Secondhand Dealers And Recyclers Association in an Ecobricks-making project. Ecobrick is a great way to repurpose plastic waste that would otherwise end up in landfills or pollute our environment. By stuffing plastic waste into a plastic bottle, you can create a building block that can be used to construct all sorts of things, from furniture to entire buildings.
Let’s spread the word and make a positive impact together!
